Major Learning Outcomes + Questions

The major I chose to explore was Marine Biology/Sciences. Parts of this track connects well with Boyer’s enriched major idea, while other parts do not. The Marine Sciences track seems more like a career education rather than a broad education due to the course requirements. Most of the classes students have to take are science based, with little to no history or English requirements. This would not provide students with a broad base of learning that is suggested in an enriched major.

However, Marine Sciences explores a large ethical and social implications on how to responsibly help innovation in the marine environment without causing damage to the ocean. Ethics and society is a big part of Boyer’s ideal education. This helps the education around the major to evolve to become better for working the world into society.

Questions for faculty member:

  1. What are the unique nuances between the different marine majors? How is Marine Biology different for Aquaculture and Aquarium Sciences?
  2. What history or English class would you suggest that would go best with a Marine Biology major that pairs well with their required courses?
  3. Is there any class focused on the economic impact the ocean has on different industries?
  4. What makes the Marine Program at UNE different from another university, other than location?
