In this project we researched a major, looking at course descriptions, the mission statement, and learning outcomes on the UNE webpage. An interview with a faculty member associated with the major was also conducted. In the paper, students were supposed to determine if the major followed Boyer’s enriched major values, or a vocational program. I found that in the major I chose, Marine Science, that there was a mix of both types of education, and that worked for my learning style. This helped my figure out what worked for my own learning style. This connects to the learning outcomes for FYS by connecting idea across disciplines and experiences.
This project was important to me because it reinforced my desire to go into the marine science field, and helped me specifically identify which major I wanted to commit to. Before this project, I was overwhelmed with the different degrees one could have in a marine science major, and now I understand the differences between each program. After this project, I met with my Academic Advisor to go over a declaration of major from the GUST program.
